Costa Rica
Artist: Fernando Porras Alvarez

Primitive Costa Rica Art with a romantic touch!
Watch Artist Fernando create his sculpture! He is constantly
observing and creating his characters utilizing a unique and
recognizable style. Fernando uses all natural materials
found in Costa Rica---tree trunks, roots, seeds, leaves,
driftwood, shells, etc, to make his endearing creatures.
Fernando's
vision is founded on a concept, “AGADA,” a profound love for
everything around him. He sees a special spirit in all
things. What he sees is real for him and his works are based
on this romantic application of his vision.
A native Costa Rican, Fernando's life was one of poverty.
While living in San Jose Costa Rica, he would make small
clay figures of religious and Xmas scenes as a way of
supporting himself and his family. However, he never really
expressed himself through art until much later in life. His
education was limited.
He
was a bus driver for 40 years occasionally drawing Costa
Rica landscapes for fun. At the age of 60, during his
retirement, he took one of his landscapes to San Jose. A
foreigner bought it for $20.
Fernando continued to draw more landscapes, but his true
love was making and shaping animals found throughout Costa
Rica---monkeys, toucans, pelicans, crocodiles, iguanas,
snakes, armadillos, sloths, and many Costa Rica birds of
different sizes and shapes. They all have a unique
characteristic style that is unmistakably FERNANDESQUE.
KIDS SAVING THE RAINFOREST and HOTEL MONO AZUL and
RAINFOREST RESTAURANT in Manuel Antonio are honored to
display and sell his works. When visiting Costa Rica's
Central Pacific coast and you see him around town or hanging
out, you will enjoy his company. Fernando loves life, has a
great sense of humor and enjoys sharing his reality with a
twinkle on his face.
